Juan M. Viaño, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Santiago (USC), promoter of ITMATI since its inception, and ITMATI's researcher, has been elected Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC).
Juan M. Viaño said that all members of his team are "happy and satisfied" with the result achieved, and "feel the support of the university community" to undertake the process of modernity that requires academic institution.
Throughout his campaign Juan M. Viaño proposed strengthening measures in order to make it a "teaching, research and entrepreneurial" university adapted to the needs of society.
"We have good ideas but everything can be improved" he said during his campaign Juan M. Viaño.
ITMATI wants to congratulate Juan M. Viaño as the new rector of the USC and wish him a great success during his mandate and undertake the process of modernity for USC as desired by his team.
Juan M. Viaño Rey (Boqueixón, 1955) is a Professor at the department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Santiago de Compostela from 1988. He has an advanced diploma by the Université Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris VI (1981) and a PhD by the USC and also Pierre et Marie Curie - París VI (1983).
His main research areas are on mathematical modellization and numerical analysis on problems of fine structures and contact problems in elasto-visco-plasticity, and mathematical modelling in biomechanical problems. His management experience includes Director of the Applied Mathematics department between 1986 and 1992, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics between 2001 and 2009 and Vice-rector of Professorship and Academic Organisation between 2009 and 2010.
